So Peter Capaldi has announced he is no longer interested in playing Doctor Who. I'm rather glad. He did a fine -- no, superb -- acting job. But his incarnation of the Doctor was joyless. There are plenty of articles discussing this news, but to me, there's little more to be said other than he's gone.
What I'm interested in is the fun of thinking up potential replacements for him.
I dread the inevitable suggestions that he be played by a woman, as has already happened to The Master: gender is too linked to the essential character of a person; you can't just stick a man in a woman's body. Ironically, if you did, it would undercut the whole "gender revolution," since it would suggest that gender is nothing more than the body parts you happen to have... unless the character was played as a man trapped in a woman's body, which would the create a silliness which would overwhelm all else. Agree or disagree?
Most importantly, who would you have play the Doctor?
Now that Sherlock is wrapped up, another go at getting Benedict Cumberlatch to play Doctor Who seems obvious, but I’m betting he’s going to stick to Hollywood for the time being (no pun intended).
BBC doesn’t want to spend much $$ on Doctor Who; would they deliberately cultivate their American audience with a Brit who was well-known to Americans? Hugh Laurie (House, MD) has been unemployed long enough... Anthony Stewart Head (Rupert “the Watcher Giles from Buffy the Vampire Slayer) is a known Whovian...
There is a push for Haley Atwell (Agent Carter) or Rupert Grint (Ron Weasley from the Harry Potter series).
Just tossing out some impossible names —
Steve Martin
Woody Allen
Colin Firth
Bill Murray
Gary Oldman
Jean Reno
As much as I liked David Tennet, Capaldi was a welcome relief from the “pretty boys”. Hugh Laurie is an interesting suggestion. Haven’t really thought about a new Doctor much. It means I will have to make another costume for my husband to wear at Comicon. Lol.
Good, Capaldi was a TERRIBLE Doctor Who.
My family despised him, but he kind of grew on us after he spent a couple billion years busting through a diamond wall with his fists.
Second Choice - Timothy Spall (Remus Lupin Harry Potter Movies, father in The Boy in The Striped Pajamas)
I like the idea of Hugh Laurie.
But why are the choices all so racist/hetrosexist? You know there’ll be a push for a minority/female/transgender.
I think you mean David Thewlis and not Timothy Spall. Spall was Peter Pettigrew.
Steve Martin? Woody Allen? Bill Murray? Are you serious? Why not Kim Kardashian? Kanye West? Beyonce?
In homage to the lgbtqabcdef123 morons, the next doctor will not be a WHO but rather a WHAT. There will be no one Doctor - instead the Doctor will be randomly played from a lineup of Tom Hiddleston, Emma Watson, A moldy bit of cheese, two frogs (one called kipper and the other one now), a halibut.
Thankfully, Rowen Atkinson’s Doctor Who effort already did the woman Doctor, whose sonic had three speed settings, IIRC, so this hopefully not likely.
I’ve watched the Doctor since the 1960’s when it ran on the CBC here in Canada (with about a decade off till PBS started...). Anyway, I started thinking it was going downhill when Moffat took over as show runner. He wrote some great who episodes (my wife still won’t watch “Blink”!) but the sense of fun was lost under his watch and instead it became bigger and badder and more “important.”
That said, I never made it through Capaldi’s first episode and haven’t been back. Time to watch “The Five Doctors” again, despite the lack of Tom Baker in it.
I think they forgot that it’s at heart a kids’ show. That doesn’t mean they have to dumb it down (far from it!), but they need to dance with the ones who brung them.
As for the next show runner, I hope whoever it is makes the Doctor great again! I’ve missed him.
cheers
Jim
maybe Samuel L. Jackson ??
I’ll let you know after Thursday. I’m going to see Dr. Hu about my gout. She’s a rheumatologist, and I hope she will have some answers for me.
I agree with you on that. And he would attract the younger fan because of the Harry Potter connection.
Study cuyanne pepper, there is a dedicated cuyanne pepper google thing , all things cuyanne an a gout recipe an cure
I simply couldn’t watch him. I only watched the early episodes because Jenna Coleman. Once she left...
