That thing is pulling a whole lot of passenger cars. The grades must be pretty light.

The decline and fall of the West began with the end of piston-powered airliners and the RR steam engine.

Now we have tubeliners, “driverless cars,” and box-shaped diesels. Bah....

In 1997 that had to be a special “Memory Ride” train using what looked like a decapod locomotive. What blew MY mind was the length of it. Were all those passenger cars filled?

Nice.

I’m a steam-chaser sometimes, Norfolk and Western 611 comes up every now and again. Also chased SP 4449, SP 2472, UP 844 and the Challenger. Great stuff.

Some idiot kid torched the turntable building in Port awhile back.
It is surrounded by a fence now.

For those not old enough to remember long-distance (not commuter!) train travel—the seats were wide, comfortable, and very far apart. They could recline enough so one could sleep, but if you could afford it, Pullman cars offered real beds at night. If you got tired of sitting you could stroll through the train. Many railroads prided themselves on their dining cars. Fresh-caught trout if you were going through the Rockies—that sort of thing.
