Joe Pyne was the grandaddy of talk radio. Also the Wolf Man contributed, I think? Putnam, my fav. was on tv first than transitioned to talk radio along with Ray Briem. Loved them and also Gordon Liddy, et. al. Larry King was fabulous as a late night talk show host, one of the best. By the end of the night he'd go into the most creative, stream of conscious rants—not political, just funny! Art Bell was wonderful before the Clinton's must have paid him off somehow—off the scandals and onto silly stuff. Savage is the only current host who has the imagination of the old-timers. Levin is a grouchy, angry man in the image of Bob Grant without Bob's humor.

If Putnam was your fav then you must be out here in SoCal where we had the great good fortune to hear him on KIEV.

Wolfman Jack was a hoot but he mostly talked between songs and took a few phone calls. Zeidler & Zeidler. The Mighty 1090 XERB! I can’t think of any current broadcasters remotely like him. A great radio persona. I wonder how many listeners thought he was black.

I forgot Ray Briem and I used to listen to him all the time. It’s a wonder I was able to stay awake at work.

I agree with you that I find Savage entertaining. He reminds me of some ethnic New Yorkers that I knew when I was growing up in Washington DC way back when.
