Freerepublic was down during not the most important time of Trump but certainly the most interesting time with no explanation of why, personally I am disappointed of having been given zero explanation, this site is sorta about exposing what went wrong. So if we don't get to hear why one of the most important websites was off line, we should at the very least should have a conversation on what to do to prevent it again from happening, Drudge has gone down a few times recently, he has way more than 250K yearly, we should, in my opinion discuss ways to keep freerepublic up under all attacks!
Hey.
I was being a bit ironic.
Frankly almost every one, is run from a liberal propaganda viewpoint.
The ones which are not outright leftist, are globalist.
Every single one.
That is part of why everyone voted for Trump. Our media is 100%, completely sold out to the globalists.
Every one of them.
“Its a very special family, here”.
Roger that, Gaijin.
I hear Jim had hired that one Russian to take care of the server...
The quarterly goals might seem like a lot but if everybody that regularly comes here kicked in $25 a quarter, we'd probably not only easily reach that amount but would likely have enough left over to build up infrastructure.
Jim Robinson's son (John) gave up his entire weekend to get things up and running for us. While it was a bit of a bummer not having the site available during most of Inauguration weekend, I appreciate the effort under trying circumstances and with limited funds.
I am not a freeloader, I pay $120 a year for a subscription or maybe more, I might have bumped it up a little, I forget. Which is higher than I pay for anything except ancestry.com.
I do think the arrangements sound somewhat old fashioned and then we get soundly jumped on if we ask questions about it.
The lack of a full and complete page load frequently seemed to start after the first crash and continues to persist. Troubleshooting an in-service production system can be difficult. Placing increased demand on the system due to lack of proper first time response can't be a help to overall system performance.
Could have been a DNS attack, but traffic was light at 9:36 Friday AM when I went to have a smoke.
Came back and she was dead as doorknob.
Damned Russians!
I don’t know where Jim runs the FR code and database, but I love Microsoft Azure cloud computing.
It has been rock solid and not expensive. He probably could run FR on it for < 50k per year and have great redundancy and ability to scale up when heavily hit.
It can run php, perl and all the old databases, but SQL Server Azure is beastly. It runs like King Cong on steroids.
Oh, well, just my 2cents.
Once you have the latest thread number range, it's easy to go back and check each thread for the last day or so and cover what you may have missed. Of course there is no way to start a flame war, but that is not of the essence of FR....
I went to the VFW and ate chilidogs
It got explained.
I was disappointed to find the Yahoo alternate requires registration now.
Hate Facebook, but that was the only alternate I found.
John’s son do the hands-on? All weekend?! This site needs full-time, automatic rollover and redundancy. It is not that expensive. Definitely a fraction of the monies raised to support FR. I’m a paying member.
But...She is hot looking.
You might want to reach out to them. If there’s a better way, I’m all for it.
I did a search and found the Facebook page where it was described as a hard server crash.
Jim knows I work in IT, my company gets great network support and my company site is never down for more than seconds or minutes. I am sure I am not alone in being able to offer real recommendations.
No such thing, AFAIU.
A CONTRIBUTING member is perhaps what you mean. I guess that's close in a way, but certainly not the same thing, since it gives you no entitlement. Well, I guess you didn't claim any.
Not me, it really was a terrible experience.
I actually signed up for the gopbriefing room and you are not kidding, not only is their site exponentially more difficult to navigate but out there, beyond the friendly confines of FR they have a totally different attitude.
Improvements are always welcome but that’s up to Jim and John’s time table and discretion.
God Bless Jim and John and all those that contribute to keeping the lights on at FR just the way it is today.
Paying or contributing. It means that I am not a freeloader. Therefore, my concern about the continuity of what I am supporting is relevant. And withdraw over inauguration weekend was VERY painful. There is no good alternatives to FR at the moment.
