Ok so I dont own freerepublic only Jim does. But we support it. Can there be an official report why on one of the most important days of crossing the finish line FR was down? Can that be explained please? Maybe we need to hold a special fundraiser to have a alternative data site and professional server managers that can handle contingency issues? This is by no means a criticism of Jim. But it was like being locked out of our own celebration at the club we belong.
” allow a quick change to another cloud provider is to code with Repositories and Data Transfer Objects, unit-test and use such mock-providers as Moq.”
I was just going to say that-——(yeah,right.):-)
FReepers are so smart.
.
Was that before or after we got rid of those nasty Italians and that fruit cake Michael Rivero?
Grateful to be back online
Had the coolest CO!
He knew who made his ship go. He put the Chief’s in charge of the hole. He would have a break-in JG down there to man the SPP or mop out the bilges in less than a minute.
It’s a website FCOL. Get a life.
Was responding to your “Everybody was over on Facebook.” statement.
Not everybody does Facebook and we cannot read easily because it covers the page with a sign-up banner.
My monthly donation lapsed years ago when my credit card was cancelled (because of fraud) and I somehow never got around to setting it up again.
Yesterday, I was inspired. More money=more robust server capacity. :)
Guess who was the most “kind of pissed”... Jim.
That was my thought, too. Some hate FB but there are good things about it. It was great being able to read the posts there.
100 percent support this concept.
As we say in IT, if it’s critical, we NEED two.
I have a fear that when Jim decides to move on, or something happens to his brother, Free Republic disappears with the only memorial being snippets available by web search.
I don’t think there’s really any need to get that complicated about it. As someone who has worked in the business for going on 2 decades, it’s probably a good idea to avoid the ‘cloud’ for FR.
From the little bit I’ve been able to gather about the architecture John has put together, it seems to me that simple Mysql replication to a second database server would have made this a few minute blip instead of a 36 hour disaster.
It doesn’t even have to be a fancy complicated failover system. If FR is down for an hour while John is notified so he can log in and switch the IP of the Mysql server, the world will not end. Then, the site comes back up and John can fix the main server while nobody knows anything is even wrong.
Maybe they already have it like this and something more catastrophic happened. This has happened a lot of times though. They should have figured it out by now. The solutions don’t have to be very expensive or complicated.
No sense of humor, I see!
HarlyLady27, What a horrific shock. I am so sorry for your loss. My deepest condolences to you and your family.
If I understand the request, a close analogy would be an external audit that is requested by shareholders of a corporation to ensure sound business processes do not endanger shareholder investments.
Free Republic is owned by Jim Robinson, but he solicits quarterly fundraisers. Does that imply any fiduciary responsibility to the funders to account for the donations? Does that obligate a report back to the funders when an extraordinary condition occurs?
If not obligate, would good manners suggest a voluntary accounting of what happened? I think that is the question being asked. Jim has always explained past outages in due time, once the root causes were discovered.

You should. I love it. That is one of my major news sites. It helps having conservative friends/relatives/news sites. FB is what you make it.
Virtual infrastructure can be expensive but costs are coming down. We use both VMware and Hyper-V at work for mission critical functions and they have performed very well.
Microsoft Azure services also allow cloud hosting and support Linux now.
I’m not sure if an analysis has been done to look at costs of dedicated hosting compared to virtual hosting (Microsoft, Amazon) but it might be worth looking into.
The Facebook page definitely helped on Inauguration day.
Only your opinion. I really enjoy it.
Thank you so much...
