The Russian hacks of the Democratic National Committee might have gone unnoticed if one of the two attacking groups hadn't made so much "noise," a security expert told the ShmooCon hacker conference here yesterday (Jan. 15).
Because that group, dubbed Fancy Bear or APT 28, was so sloppy, it was caught within a few weeks, said Toni Gidwani, director of research operations at Arlingon, Virginia, cybersecurity firm ThreatConnect. The subsequent investigation led to the discovery of a year-old, continuing penetration of the DNC's servers by a rival Russian group, called Cozy Bear or APT 29, that had previously gone undetected.
The self-identified Romanian hacktivist who called himself Guccifer 2.0, who took responsibility for the DNC attacks, was simply a rushed attempt by Fancy Bear to deflect suspicion from both groups, Gidwani said.
Yet because what appears to have been an overall Russian attempt to influence the U.S. presidential election apparently succeeded, and because both Russian groups are still actively competing with one another, she said, we can expect such large-scale Russian cyberattacks upon American targets to only continue.
Fancy Bear is thought to be run by the GRU, Russia's military intelligence service. It has conducted rather brutal cyberattacks upon a French TV station, the German parliament and even the White House.
Cozy Bear is thought to be run by either the SVR, Russia's foreign intelligence service, or the FSB, its domestic intelligence service. It has attacked the Pentagon as well as diplomatic and governmental institutions in many countries, but its methods are quiet and stealthy and focus on information gathering.
Yet neither group seemed to be aware that the other had also penetrated the DNC's servers. "That may seem absurd to Western intelligence agencies," Gidwani said, "but the Russians have a competitive dynamic within their own intelligence community."

Now there's some real high quality intelligence work for you. We THINK that the GRU just MIGHT BE Fancy Bear. Or, it could be some 14 year old kid with a home built computer and a 1200 baud modem. Who knows? Who actually cares except the Dems desperate to explain away their incompetent candidate and their failed presidential campaign.

Option 1) Americans in the CIA (Leaks and Political Meddling Branch) or the NSA (Department of Political Appointees) named these groups “Fancy Bear” and “Cozy Bear” based on an assumption that they were Russian, an attribution that was almost certainly encouraged for political reasons.
Option 2) The Russians said, “I know some great nicknames for our hacking groups. They will all be ‘Bear’ because we are Russian! The GRU will call theirs ‘Fancy Bear’, and the SVR will call theirs ‘Cozy Bear’.”
Somehow, neither explanation convinces me that Hillary lost because of Russian hacking. Of course I believe the Russians hacked Hillary’s server, and Podesto’s, and the DNC’s, but so did everyone else. This is a blame game and part of an inside-the-government and media effort to question the legitimacy of the president, now that we finally have a legitimate president.

Assange has said that hackers will often try to appear to be something they are not. In other words, if a hacker comes in from an IP or with names or intercepts that look Chinese or Russian or whatever, it’s a good chance it’s made to look that way especially if it is easy to detect.
No doubt Russians of some sort were snooping but likely many others were likewise. As I posted weeks ago, a total lie would be that no Russians of any sort attempted to hack into any USA network, etc.
