California's bullet train hurtling toward multibillion-dollar overrun, federal report warns
Los Angeles Times ^ | January 13, 2017 | By Ralph Vartabedian

California’s bullet train could cost taxpayers 50% more than estimated — as much as $3.6 billion more. And that’s just for the first 118 miles through the Central Valley, which was supposed to be the easiest part of the route between Los Angeles and San Francisco.

A confidential Federal Railroad Administration risk analysis, obtained by The Times, projects that building bridges, viaducts, trenches and track from Merced to Shafter, just north of Bakersfield, could cost $9.5 billion to $10 billion, compared with the original budget of $6.4 billion.

The federal document outlines far-reaching management problems: significant delays in environmental planning, lags in processing invoices for federal grants and continuing failures to acquire needed property.

The California High-Speed Rail Authority originally anticipated completing the Central Valley track by this year, but the federal risk analysis estimates that that won’t happen until 2024, placing the project seven years behind schedule.

The report, the most critical official assessment of the project to surface so far, is labeled a “confidential-draft deliberative document for internal use only” and was presented by senior Federal Railroad Administration executives to California rail authority board Chairman Dan Richard and Chief Executive Jeff Morales on Dec. 1 in Washington. . .

I hope it goes WAY over budget.

The bay bridge project was 5 billion over budget and 10 years late, and had problems after completion. It’s the California way!

No, please hope it dies, or at least all Federal support is withdrawn.

Although this is not the first time this article has been posted, I believe that it was never intended to be under budget. If they came in anywhere near a budget, there wouldn’t be enough money in it to make the rich people out of the people involved in building it. It is a massive payola scheme financed by the people of California and the Federal taxpayer. Of course nobody objects to it because they have been told that it will support itself by charging fares.

If CA wants a train, they can pay for their own train. No reason they should have received any Fed money for this.

Well .. with the hiring of Eric Holder .. I doubt there will be enough money to finish the “bullet train”. Remember, Eric is going to be supporting all the many, many sanctuary cities up and down the state.

Let the train stand there in the desert and rust itself; as a reminder to all residents of this State .. here lies the result of bad judgment; and foolish and unlawful actions.
