The media loves two things; celebrities whining about Trump and fact checks.
Today's post combines both of them together as The Point's Fact Check fact checks President-elect Trump's contention that overrated actress Meryl Streep is indeed overrated. Now try saying that three times fast.
The controversy began when Meryl Streep whined at the Golden Globes that Hollywood celebrities were among the most vilified in American society.
"All of us in this room, really, belong to the most vilified segments in American society right now. Think about it. Hollywood, foreigners and the press. But who are we? And, you know, what is Hollywood anyway? It's just a bunch of people from other places."
"Hollywood is crawling with outsiders and foreigners. If you kick 'em all out, you'll have nothing to watch but football and mixed martial arts, which are not the arts."
President-elect Donald J. Trump responded by calling Meryl Streep overrated. This makes him more qualified to be a film critic than most actual film critics who refuse to recognize this simple fact...

I find it incomprehensible why people exalt Robert Redford-who's been in perhaps 4 good films in his career-or Clooney, Marcia Gay Harden, Kevin Spacey, Don Cheadle, or a host of other "brilliant" actors.
In constant dollars, yeah. Adjust for inflation and her highest grossing films were "Kramer vs. Kramer", "Out of Africa", and "The Deer Hunter" with "Mama Mia" coming in fourth. Of course that's U.S. box office. World wide "Mama Mia" took in over $600 million.
Only $530M from six films? I take a stab and say that the collective production budgets were in that neighborhood.
No, they all made money. Some more than others.
She has a list of awards as long as any thespian. She has some talent obviously. That said who one likes or dislikes in the celeb acting field is purely personal. For me from the handful of movies I have seen her in she is ok. Able and competent. She did play a good bitch in The Devil Wears Prada but maybe that wasn’t acting.
I really hated it.
One of the great things about famous actors is that if they are in a movie, and it is not chock full of them, it’s probably pretty good because they choose scripts with an eye to protecting their “brand”. I love movies about musicians and my wife and I enjoy her movies so we saw this as a win/win.
The deeper message of the movie sort of redeemed it in the end, but the characters and their responses to situations were simply not believable to us. We were both very dissapointed that she showed poor judgement to do that movie. It would be better suited to an aging actress with just a touch less street cred.
After I posted I hit rotten tomatoes. Yeah, what they said, only they say it better.

If you spend a large part of your life portraying someone whom you are not, eventually you will come too the point at which neither you nor others really know who you are. With Meryl Streep as a case in point, it seem clear that she has lost the coordinates and anchor of provable reality.
I think she’s better than those actors, but also believe she receives a disproportionate amount of praise compared to genuinely outstanding actors, e.g. Sam Rockwell, Gary Oldman, Laura Linney, among others.

I’ve always thought she was overrated, but she usually picked movies with a good script. It’s why I so seriously ding her for Ricky and the Flash.
Still, I'm always intrigued by the type of art that receives universal adulation from the gliterati.
How does someone fact-check an opinion like this?
The year is irrelevant. If she was great, she was great. She still is great. Watch the Jenkins movie. She’s great at what she does and I don’t begrudge her talent or pretend she is not good.
I will say she was in one of my all-time favorite movies, “Defending Your Life”, but her role in it was rather minor.
A truly good actor is Paul Newman. He is good in any movie I have seen him in. Watch Hud.
Didn’t see it. I am not a fan of Streep. I don’t see a movie because she is in it. If she is it’s just incidental. One of her movies I stopped watching was Mama Mia but it had nothing to do with her just the movie itself to me was unwatchable.
I forgot she was in Mamma Mia. And you are right. It was really bad. I’m actually seeing a pattern here. I saw one with Samuel Jackson and Nicolas Cage - and now her.
Maybe there just aren’t as many good scripts around as there used to be.
She normally doesn’t make “big” films. Her kind of movie is smaller and is usually drama. Her last movie, “Florence Jenkins” or something similar to that was about a person who lived in NYC in the 1920s to 40s, who could not carry a tune and yet attracted fans such as Cole Porter. That is not the type of movie that packs in the teenagers at late night showings. She does not do super hero movies.
I completely agree. Newman was a legend-and even turned out some good work at the tail-end of his career.
I'm Ms. Streep would enjoy that headline.
