Has anyone seen Hidden Figures? Is it appropriate for a young girl?
I have a 12 year old girl who is interested in math, astronomy, and NASA. I thought the movie might motivate her.
All of my family has seen it except me, and they loved it.
Thanks. Nice reference and to the point. I’ll post after we see it.
I have not seen the movie, but I suspect it is filled with PC propaganda.
However, this much I do know. The main character in the movie, Katherine Johnson, is in real life absolutely the real deal. She would be a good role model for anyone, black or white, male or female.
So I’d suggest that your daughter first read up on Katherine Johnson. I’d also suggest that she read up on Admiral Grace Hopper. Adm. Hopper was a computer scientist, and a most remarkable woman.
my GF and her bitchy friends saw it, and they liked it too. Think “the Help” without lee Daniel’s anti-white crap..
Haven’t seen it, but Medved reviewed it on his show today and said it was as family friendly as it could be and fine for kids.
Great film! Extremely well done with an almost 50’s-early 60’s feel. Simpler, sweeter times. Excellent for the entire family, yet intriguing, exciting, thrilling!
And I do not hand out such epithets lightly.
Why there has not been a biopic about her is beyond my comprehension.
I certainly agree. The PC crowd wants a woman on the U.S. $20 bill. Harriet Tubman has been proposed. I'm OK with that. Tubman was a brave soul, and a Republican as well! But Hopper would also make a good choice there.
Yes. We read the book. Sadly, the preface and first chapter were the best parts. It was a bit of a slog to get through, as the author went off on tangents, became too detailed on some minor issues, and lacked an engaging writing style. Still, the subject matter was so intriguing that it pulls you along. It would have been stunning had it been done by a biographer like McCullough. That said, it was a decidedly good effort for this author’s first book. The character of the women involved, their determination to be judge by ability and nothing else, and their devotion to God, family, and their profession is inspiring.
One of my daughters did an internships at a NASA facility and last May graduated magna cum laude with an Aerospace Engineering degree. She’s now employed with a major aerospace company. My joke has been that we finally have an actual rocket scientist in the family. But if I tried to describe my level of pride I’d fall a million miles short. Your daughter should never be told she can’t do something she dreams of and her talents permit.
“Queen” is an allegedly true story about a female chess genius from the slums of Uganda.
However, several professional chess players have stepped forward and stated that the Uganda woman is, at best, a better than average club player.
I TRIED posting the facts about Katherine Johnson of "Hidden Figures" and the gross exaggeration of thew story, but the Mods DELETED IT! Feels a bit like HuffPost right now. Unreal!
Awesome! I love hearing how your daughter achieved her dreams! You deserve all that pride.
I must have posted after you got zapped because I didn't see your Comment.
The “Oppressed Black People” movie genre has really worn thin with me.
Within the last week, Forbes Magazine had a story about the wealthiest celebrities in the world.
Four American Blacks made the Top 10.
Oprah, Michael Jordan, Tiger Woods, and one of the Black pay-per-view boxers.
Michael Jackson would have made the list if not for his insomnia-related overdose death.
And a Black American record producer made the Top 25.
I disagree that it was PC propaganda. If anything it had much more of a Trump-”Make America Great Again” vibe to it, however unintentional. Very patriotic and most importantly: pro-Christian. Not overtly “preachy” but there certainly is a preacher in the film :).
Its made quite clear that the noblest deeds of the Civil Rights movement were inspired ultimately by FAITH.
And all the romantic relationships were tastefully presented :).
This one wasn’t like that. Although race and gender played central roles in the characters’ experiences in “Hidden Figures,” the film overall celebrated patriotism as a whole. It reminds us of the beauty of the American dream, historic American greatness (as achieved by NASA effort in this case.) It had that “MAGA” spirit Trump hopes to revive.
And it was pro-Christian.
