On January 31st of this year, Sarah Root was killed by an illegal immigrant. Below is a letter that was sent to John Walsh of CNN's The Hunt requesting that he air Sarah's story with the hope of catching her killer, Edwin Mejia of Honduras.
Law enforcement thinks he's still in the U.S. and may be working on a construction or roofing crew.
The family is asking for help and would appreciate any assistance in bringing this to Mr. Walsh's attention via Facebook, Twitter or ??? Thank you.

On January 31st, 2016, Sarah Rae Ann Root walked at Bellevue University with a 4.0 GPA and a Bachelor's in Criminal Investigation from Bellevue University. Less than 24 hours later, Sarah would be rear ended while stopped at a stop light and murdered by alleged drunk driver and illegal immigrant, 19 year old Edwin Mejia of Honduras.
As a minor, Edwin Mejia was 8 times over the legal drinking limit. Omaha police state that Edwin was drag racing and doing 70 m.p.h. when he ended what her professor and Omaha Police Chief Todd Schmaderer said was an individual who "had a tremendously bright future."
Sarah is the hero in this story as she was an organ donor. Her family kept her on life support for three days while organ recipients were notified and prepared for transplant. Sarah saved the lives of six individuals through her unselfish act and helped countless others through her donation of tissue and bone.
Mejia had been arrested but released after posting 10% of a $50,000 bail. Despite law enforcement pleas to federal authorities to take custody of Mejia, he has absconded and hasn't been seen since.
This senseless killing was preventable and has captured the hearts of millions as Sarah's story has been told around the world. Due to the outrage created by Edwin Mejia's release, he is the first drunk driver added to the U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) Top Ten Most Wanted List due to the political pressure applied by Iowa Senator Grassley.
Sarah's death prompted congressional hearings by Congressmen Chaffetz, Goodlatte and Gowdy where ICE Director Sarah Saldana and other Obama administration personnel were questioned on ICE retention policies.
Sarah's mother, Michelle Wilson-Root and father, Scott have testified at congressional hearings. Sarah's story has inspired Iowa and Nebraska senators Ernst, Fischer, Grassley and Sasse to co-sponsor Sarah's Law requiring federal authorities to take custody of illegal immigrants who injure or kill another person.
Iowa and Nebraska congressmen Ashford and Young sponsored a similar bill in the House of Representatives. Iowa congressman Steve King has since re-submitted a version and Sen. Joni Ernst has re-committed to reintroducing the bill.
President Elect Donald Trump has befriended and advocated on behalf of the Root family appearing with Michelle and her family at campaign stops in Nebraska and Iowa. So taken with Sarah's story, Mr. Trump mentioned Sarah prominently in his acceptance speech at the Republican national convention in Cleveland. Michelle and her family will be guests at President Elect Trump's inauguration in January.
Authorities believe Edwin is still in the midwest possibly working on a roofing or construction crew. The Root family is asking Mr. Walsh for his help in apprehending Edwin Mejia so he can face charges with Sarah's murder. The family encourages Mr. Walsh and his staff to research Sarah's remarkable story and hopefully honor her memory by advocating for the capture of her killer. Thank you for your consideration.
