See my post #51 about the 'V' haplogroup. The U5a haplogroup has a large presence amoungst the Sami's too.

Both are really old haplogroups.

According to a chart in Manco's book, V is a descendant of HV. HV branches about 20,000 years ago into HV1, HV0, and H. V is a descendant of HV0. H has a bunch of subclades--mine is H5.

She has a chart showing the earliest confirmed datable example of each mtDNA group in Europe--for V it is from 5640-5560 B.C., found at Alsonyek-Bataszek, Hungary.
