Publix pressured to cover enquirer at checkout line.

Unfortunately Kroger comes in a very distant second to Publix in pretty much any category you want to cover. If Publix were to open a store where I live the Kroger we have would go out of business in 6 months. Deservedly so. I don’t know how good Kroger used to be but corporate wise they’re pretty crappy now.

Actually, in our area (Hilton Head), the new Krogers are pretty amazing.

You are fortunate. I live in a small town with Kroger and Walmart as the grocery options. I called the Kroger home office on some issues at our store. I got a serious case of STFU attitude from some entry level bimbo that refused to let me go higher up.
They have remodeled our entire store 3 times in the last 11 years and still can't put an awning up over the entrance. We have to trudge through rain, snow and ice depending on the season. I asked the manager about it and I get shrugs along with "who knows?". They won't keep the shrubbery in the parking lot trimmed so you have to pull out to see if a car is coming. Again, manager just shrugs.
And the "bakery"? Our Kroger seems to think decent fresh bread is some sort of exotic food. You want 1/2 a package of bakery rolls. Nope. Buy it all, or nothing. Ask them why the rye bread is not baked all the way, doughy inside? Blank stares. When I lived in Florida you could order custom sized sour dough bread baked at Publix. Or select any number of kaiser rolls you wanted.
I don't know how Publix is now, but I never saw the facial piercings, tats, etc I get the pleasure to see at Kroger. In Kroger's defense, the labor pool is lacking. Rant over. Sigh.
