FESTIVUS – December 23
http://www.nationaldaycalendar.com ^ | n/a | n'a

Festivus was created by Reader’s Digest editor and author Daniel O’Keefe in response to family tension. One of its central practices is the “airing of grievances.” It was first celebrated in February of 1966 but later was recognized as it is now, on December 23 in honor of O’Keefe’s first date with his future wife. The Seinfeld episode was written by O’Keefe’s son.

The Festivus pole is an unadorned aluminum pole displayed in the home. In the O’Keefe household, there was no Festivus pole, but instead, a clock was placed in a bag and nailed to the wall.

•Festivus dinner is served during the evening.

•The Airing of Grievances occurs during Festivus dinner. Each person takes turns describing how the others have disappointed him or her over the past year.

•Feats of Strength follows dinner and involves wrestling the head of the household. The holiday is not complete unless the head of the household is pinned. Failure to pin the head of the household could result in perpetual Festivus.

•A Festivus Miracle is a frequent if unimpressive miracle. Carrying in all the groceries into the house for Festivus Dinner without tripping or dropping one of the bags could be considered a Festivus Miracle.

It is not funny. If it was not meant to displace Christmas, why not put it on another date?

I think more Americans celebrate Festivus than Kwanzaa.

Last week I went to my kids' school Christmas play, given by grades K-2. An almost lily-white school, I rolled my eyes when they went into the little "Kwanzaa" segment of the all-holiday inclusive presentation. I heard some other subtle groans as well. I have never met anyone, anywhere who celebrated Kwanzaa.

Seinfeld is not funny. I cannot relate to NYC-centric cultural snobbery, and neither can millions of the rest of us out here in the Flyover states.

What is funny about that? “The rest of us”? Meaning, nonbelievers in Christmas?

and I’m pretty sure Jesus was born in September - so we are a little late on the birthday celebration..

Completely irrelevant.

The Christian world has agreed on this date. Which is why the unbelieving world tries to create alternate "holidays" around this date.

You want a grievance? I’ll give you a grievance.
We’re already airing grievances and we haven’t had any dinner yet!
How’s that for a grievance!?!

Typical crude NYC-cultural snobbery, with canned laughter in the background. Not funny.

Seinfeld could be hilarious but for the most part was fairly funny and a few times, just boring.

It did not hit politics really heavy but did at least a couple of times make blatantly mean spirited pro abortion statements.

I think part of it’s success was that you didn’t really like any of them. They were mostly jerks but funny ones. It is funnier to see a creep slip on a banana peel.

That is a good fruitcake recipe. I only made one fruitcake and it was a disaster.

After it was done I put it back in the oven. That would have been OK, except I forgot to turn the oven off. The oven was only set for 220 degrees but after baking for another 24 hours, I couldn’t remove it from the pan. It was like a cement block.

I ended up throwing cake and pan away because I was so mad at myself I didn’t want to think about it anymore!

Both my kids went to school and repeated what I had taught them... “we don’t celebrate fake holidays created by a criminal.”

It was delicious....and let the air out of kwanzaa

Jesus was most likely born in late February to early March not September. If the shepherds were watching their flocks...meant there were lambs to be supervised.

You must be pushing eighty. Only someon without a pop culture clue would think that Festivus is anything but a joke.

Or, you have been in the backwoods too long.

Or, my third theory is that you are an engineer and they sucked the fun part of your brain somewhere between civil engineering 101 and thermodynamics.

It’s a fun joke that is “designed” to contrast the phoniness of the commercialism of the modern, retail, non-secular celebration of Christmas.

If you are sick of the Glamour Christmas vs the traditional celebration of our savior...then you should embrace the cynicism of Festivus.
