That was my first thought, too, but my second thought was "Hey, OK. The mom fell asleep. In heartbeat, the toddler was out the door. This could happen to anyone."

That's actually true. Moms do doze off, and baby can be wobbling energetically toward the tall grass quick as a baa-baa black sheep.
