Patina, yes, but sometimes they are so crusty that no features are visible.

You can buy them on eBay for a dollar or two and uncovering them is indeed rewarding.

Yeah, Roman coins have taken quite a beating over the years and being given a view of any political message that may have been put on the coin could be a great insight into history.
