The movie wasn’t popular in the theater. It got its cult status from HBO and the like where it played multiple times a day. People started getting that type of humor after immersion. The best thing to do is ignore the plot about Danny Noonan getting a scholarship and concentrate on Murray, Dangerfield, and to a lesser extent Chase and Ted Knight (Dangerfield’s foil )

From what I’ve heard that’s ultimately what the makers of the movie did also. It was originally supposed to mainly be about the caddies and their various plot lines, with the Chase/Dangerfield/Murray parts being more like extended cameos. But the “cameos” (many ad libbed) were so much better/funnier than the caddy related crap that the makers of the movie rightly decided to flip the two in terms of screen time.
And a classic was born...and that’s all she wrote.
