Man Shoots Himself in Chest With Crossbow While Hunting

Accident occurred as man was trying to disarm crossbow after a day of deer hunting
A man accidentally shot himself in the chest with a crossbow while he was hunting with a group of people in the Marlborough Forest on Sunday night, according to Ottawa paramedics.
It happened at about 6 p.m. Sunday in the woods near Dwyer Hill Road and Roger Stevens Drive, north of Merrickville, Ont., and south of Richmond, Ont.
The 45-year-old man was trying to disarm the crossbow after a day of deer hunting when he accidentally shot himself, paramedics said.
His friends helped him to the road and were met there by an ambulance, paramedics said.
He was taken to hospital where he was listed in serious but stable condition.

How? How did he shoot himself in the chest with a crossbow?
Shooting oneself in the chest with a crossbow strikes me as being only a little less difficult than shooting oneself in the chest with a longbow.

Remember the guy in DELIVERANCE who went to the hospital with an arrow wound in the back? Claimed he shot himself.
(Fell backward on the arrow during a fight with a hillbilly)

How was it, in the movie Deliverance, one of the characters was firing the bow and it reversed. Strange things can happen with bows and arrows I understand.

That’s what I was thinking. I just don’t see how he did it trying to de-cock it. Either supposed to use the special heavy bolt and shoot at the ground or some can be de-cocked with the cocking rope.

Something to be said for Kilts...I like a Thai pakama or a sarong, at least in warm weather.
Though I never shot myself with a crossbow, I recall putting a staple in my thumb while fiddling with a malfunctioning stapler. People think it's a trick when you ask them to pull out a staple. Ow.

The only safe way to de-cock a crossbow is to fire it. I always carry one bolt with a target point on it, as well as a Morrell Yellow Jacket Field-Point Target that I leave in my truck, and I safely shoot the Field-Point bolt into the target to de-cock.
NEVER try to manually de-cock a crossbow,
