What is done with the oil-soaked hair mats? They have to be disposed of somehow.

So instead of oil pollution, we end up with “hair” pollution...

Actually, there is a way to take care of this now hazardous substance. It is called “thermal depolymerization”, in which any organic substance is heated to a high temperature in the absence of oxygen, and the organic material is turned into kerogen, a form of crude oil. Proceeds fairly quickly, provides a source material for other manufacturing processes, and produces no noxious products like incineration or land disposal would.
