A crash involving dozens of vehicles and a tractor-trailer shut down Interstate 95 in South Baltimore Saturday morning.

At least two people were killed and 15 were injured in the icy pileup, three of those seriously.

Emergency crews at the scene said at least 55 vehicles and one tanker were involved in the crash near the exit for Washington Boulevard on I-95 south just before 5 a.m.

Glad Mrs. JimRed traveled down to DC to visit younger son & family on Friday instead of today!

The site where the accident occurred is an elevated freeway (bridges freeze before roads!) on a downgrade, leading up to a curve to the right. It’s on the northbound side. The tanker looked like it was going way too fast for conditions, so my guess is either that the driver was being reckless, or he had already lost control by that point, before he flipped off the road.

I’m not sure why someone would have been standing next to the median barrier on the southbound side filming when the accident happened, unless there was already another accident at that location that he had gotten involved in.

It seems he was stuck in the opposite lanes and was making video of what was happening on the downhll side of the interstate across from him.

and the occasional knucklehead driving 10 mph with their flashers on,

I'll bet those guys in that 40 car pile up wish they were driving the same way.......

It’s looked and felt like snow here in NC for several days. Scattered flurries around, some freezing rain, I understand Raleigh had enough ice to cause a few traffic problems, but nothing like that.

“No way in Hades you will get me up there this time of year. (except maybe the inauguration if I can get tickets) “

Congratulations on your plans to attend. Even though I gave $1,400 to the Trump Campaign, I’m going to attend by my 80” TV. Just too much of a mob scene. However, the NRA Convention in Atlanta at the end of April is another matter. I’ll be there and, hopefully, President Trump will address us in person.

I was going to pick up kid from college at start of Christmas break. When I saw forecasts of ice and freezing rain in the morning, I told kid I would be showing up in the afternoon, after warming temperatures had melted the ice. (Forecast is for temps to steadily rise into the evening)

If they’d been driving 10 mph they might as well have been stopped in the middle of the road. Rear ended just the same, imho. Rock and a hard place, ice on the road but if you slow way down you’re going to get rammed, same thing happens in fog. There’s such a thing as too much fear and caution while driving. If it’s that bad, pull over and stop in the emergency lane as far away from the traffic lanes as possible and get away from the car, over the guardrail would probably be a good idea.

...

My guess is the cars on that side couldn’t make it up the icy grade.

...

It also looked like the lights were out on that side of the road.

Yep. The roads were salted well here in Annapolis, but still a little slippery. Trees were coated in ice by 10am.

That sucks. Here in Texas it's currently a cool 79°.

Haha. I was raised on the Gulf Coast. Having ice on the trees in December up here is pretty awesome.

occasional knucklehead driving 10 mph with their flashers on,
= = = = = = = = =
Typically 3 kinds of drivers in inclement weather...

20MPH over the speed limit because ‘can drive in this stuff’
40MPH+ below speed limit in cleared lane
The rest of “US” trying to avoid the other 2 sets..

Like I always say

NO ONE knows how to drive in the snow except ‘me’ and whoever ‘I’ am talking to and ‘I’ am not to sure of him.

Google Street view approximating the POV of the video, which was displaced to the right of this view. The gap between the roadways looks smaller here, but that's where the tanker fell.

Thanks for clearing that up. There is a gap between the two elevated roadways, the gap that the tanker fell into. The guy shooting the video was on the uphill roadway and nobody was going up that hill with any speed at all.
