He wasn’t the first man in space but he was the first American in space.

Together with Yuri Gargarin, they blazed man’s path to the heavens.

John Glenn will be sadly missed. RIP.

He was the 1st American to orbit the earth, Al Shepard was the 1st American in space.

No, no. Navy Captain Alan Shepherd was the first American in space - if you want to discount the many X - 15 flights which made it to the fringes of space.

Actually he was the third in space behind Sheppard and Grissom. He was the first American to orbit.
