The Rise of Political Correctness
Independent Institute ^ | 28 Nov, 2016 | Angelo M. Codevilla

“Comrade, your statement is factually incorrect.” “Yes, it is. But it is politically correct.”

The notion of political correctness came into use among Communists in the 1930s as a semi-humorous reminder that the Party’s interest is to be treated as a reality that ranks above reality itself. Because all progressives, Communists included, claim to be about creating new human realities, they are perpetually at war against nature’s laws and limits. But since reality does not yield, progressives end up pretending that they themselves embody those new realities. Hence, any progressive movement’s nominal goal eventually ends up being subordinated to the urgent, all-important question of the movement’s own power. Because that power is insecure as long as others are able to question the truth of what the progressives say about themselves and the world, progressive movements end up struggling not so much to create the promised new realities as to force people to speak and act as if these were real: as if what is correct politically—i.e., what thoughts serve the party’s interest—were correct factually.

Communist states furnish only the most prominent examples of such attempted groupthink. Progressive parties everywhere have sought to monopolize educational and cultural institutions in order to force those under their thumbs to sing their tunes or to shut up. But having brought about the opposite of the prosperity, health, wisdom, or happiness that their ideology advertised, they have been unable to force folks to ignore the gap between political correctness and reality.

A long essay, but worth reading.

progressive movements end up struggling not so much to create the promised new realities as to force people to speak and act as if these were real

In other words, to become partners in the pathology. THAT is why fags demand to be "legitimized." Nobody cares what they do in their bedrooms, but that isn't enough. Nobody cares that some guy wants to slip into a pair of lacey panties and strut around. But that isn't enough. Nobody cares if BLMers want to sit around and smoke dope all day. But that isn't enough.

In every case, that private behavior demands to be brought out in the public sphere and approved. If it remains a private perversion, it has no power. Only in forcing everyone to accept it can it be used as a tool to redefine reality.

Yep. And all of the bathroom identity and the penalties if not speaking to people in the proper gender terminology is the same thing.

The first time I ever heard the term “Politically Incorrect” was when I read a book called “Eighth Moon” about a young girl’s life in Communist China.

I was in the 7th grade when I read it, so it was probably in 1964 or 1965.

In Canada, EU and many other places “Hate Speech” laws are used to suppress people from speaking the truth.

Absolutely. People have gone to jail for merely speaking the truth.

Yep. It’s called, shoving it down your throat.

It’s not about tolerance but exaltation, about putting it on a pedestal and forcing you to kneel in front of it.

It’s sad to see that only 12 people have responed to this wonderfully insightful article because that indicates a low level of interest, perhaps because it is clothed in a lot of intellectual trappings and references.

But this is a very well-reasoned article on the reason for the Trump revolution and victory over the ruling elites.

Pretty sad when the muslims kill people repeatedly in terrorist attacks and you can’t say anything against it.

Brilliant paper, and thanks for posting. Bookmarked.

Almost too many valuable insights to comment on. This one alone, for example:

In fact, Communism is an ideology by, of, and for ideologues, that ends up empowering and celebrating those very ideologues. This is as true of progressivism’s other branches as it is of Marxism.

Indeed it is. I have always found it curious that the very same activist may cry against the oppression and celebrate the accession to power of the very same dirty-handed proletariat that in all other aspects he views in withering contempt. Find a campus progressive who likes rednecks, for example, and good luck with that.

So yes, the song is about the singer and always has been. Selflessness is Marxism's greatest and most flatulent pose, and when the leaders of the Revolution are the ones being driven around in limousines, it's embarrassingly evident.

Yet, notwithstanding progressivism’s premise that individual minds merely reflect society’s basic structure and hence are incapable of reasoning independently about true and false, better and worse, reality forces progressives to admit that individuals often choose how they think or act despite lacking the “structural” basis for doing so, or that they act contrary to the economic, social, or racial “classes” into which progressive theories divide mankind. They call this freedom of the human mind “false consciousness.”

Marx avoided this problem by insisting that there is only one demarcation of class, economics. It isn't so; an individual may also be a white proletarian or a black bourgeoisie, man or woman, French or German, gay or straight. In fact, it is "class" that is the construct, not any collective consciousness or interest, and when an individual is, as he is, a member of infinite multiple "classes", his interest, his identity must necessarily be individual. And that is the proper repository of political rights, within the individual, which is completely contrary to the fervent insistence of class theory. Collectivism undoes itself, Marxism displays "internal contradictions" to use Marx's phrase, and Locke and the Founders were right all along. That's how you build a society, not around any intricate manipulations of class in the interest of any fictive "social justice" or "political correctness".

This one is going to take some time to digest properly. Thanks again for posting.
