yeah , most people don't know which way is North
much less read a map or compass. Now a days , most people who don't go outdoors don't even know how to read a topographic map !

I use GPS (dedicated device and phone) but absolutely need to do map recon with real paper maps before I set out on any major trip. I don’t know how anyone can navigate based on a tiny 5” window view of a small portion of their route without seeing the big picture first.
