Its generally accepted that its no longer a question of whether the West Antarctic Ice Sheet will melt, its a question of when, said Ian Howat, associate professor of earth sciences at Ohio State.
We may see a significant collapse of West Antarctica in our lifetimes.
In 2013, a gigantic rift began forming within a valley in the ice of the Pine Island Glacier.
Then, in 2015, a 225-square-mile iceberg broke off and floated away. Discovered a massive crack across the Pine Island Glacier, in the West Antarctic Ice Sheet. Extending for 19 miles, the crack was 260 feet wide and 195 feet deep.Photo: NASA
Howat said this could indicate that the massive slab of ice was being eaten away from the inside out.
Rifts usually form at the margins of an ice shelf, where the ice is thin and subject to shearing that rips it apart, he added.
However, this latest event in the Pine Island Glacier was due to a rift that originated from the center of the ice shelf and propagated out to the margins.
This implies that something weakened the center of the ice shelf, with the most likely explanation being a crevasse melted out at the bedrock level by a warming ocean.
The ice sheet has previously been described as an awakened giant and is mostly made up of glaciers sitting on top of a layer of bedrock.
If it melts, it would add vast amounts of water into the oceans, sending sea levels rocketing to dangerous heights.
The really troubling thing is that there are many of these valleys further up-glacier, Howat added. If they are actually sites of weakness that are prone to rifting, we could potentially see more accelerated ice loss in Antarctica.

Glad I'm old :)
I lived most of my life in Bklyn, Queens, Nassau and finally moved to upstate New York.
Or maybe undersea volcanic activity............
At least the streets and sidewalks will be cleaned.
Scientists Warn Of Massive
Tidal Wave From
Canary Island Volcano

A wave higher than Nelson’s Column and travelling faster than a jet aircraft will devastate the eastern seaboard of America and inundate much of southern Britain, say scientists who have analysed the effects of a future volcanic eruption in the Canary Islands.
A massive slab of rock twice the volume of the Isle of Man would break away from the island of La Palma and smash into the Atlantic Ocean to cause a tsunami - a monster wave - bigger than any recorded, the scientists warned yesterday.
The computer model, compiled in collaboration with Steven Ward of the University of California, Santa Cruz, predicts that the tsunami will have a height of 100 metres (330ft) from crest to trough when it crashes into the shores of nearby north-west Africa. By the time it reached its final destination, the east coast of Florida and the Caribbean islands, the tsunami would still be up to 50 metres high.
Low-lying land in Florida would be vulnerable to a sea wave that would inundate the mainland for several kilometres inland. Everything in its path would be flattened, the computer model predicted.
Even though the wave would be much smaller when it reached Britain, it would still breach sea defences because it would be larger than the biggest storm waves for which they were designed, Dr Day said. “For low-lying land along the south coast it could penetrate up to a mile,” he said.
I would say they should be writing horror novels, but they aren’t very good at scaring people.
From their website:
The companys headquarters is based in Bayonne New Jersey and a second manufacturing facility is located in Rice Lake Wisconsin.
The Bayonne site is right on the water, the Kill Van Kull, about one mile East of the Bayonne Bridge.
If you don't know it's there, you don't know it's there, it's that low key. Even after passing it on the water a couple hundred times and fishing on the dock right outside their gate, it took a friend telling Me he got a job there making parts for Me to know it was there.
“Gaia is punishing the humans”
I know a fellow who did not believe in God, his faith was in Gaia. I had to give him credit, though, he confessed when he was having a heart attack, and thought he was going to die, he wasn’t praying to Gaia for salvation. Nothing like a brush with death to make a man’s mind right . . .

Spare Staten Island. It voted 57% Trump.
Thanks for the correction. It looks like they moved from Brooklyn in 2008.
