The punctuation makes the difference. If he had just said Fidel Castro is dead, that would have just been a news report. With the mark, it is an exclamation. You can’t say exclaiming is not weighing in.

The NYT and their ilk would have refuted anything derogatory Trump would’ve said, and lambasted him for being rude and undiplomatic.
But now they have to figure out how to refute Trump’s exclamation point - everybody knows why it’s there, so it will be amusing to see how many column inches the Times can spend arguing against a “!”.
