What Robert Florczak misses is the invention of the camera. Once the camera could capture precise realism, artists were free to explore abstraction, and the development of Cubism and Abstract Expressionism are truly superb movements. I am interested in the graduate students who wrote about his apron; that “work” did not seem to be by Pollock to me, and few of my undergraduate students would have been fooled.
The way to judge modern, and traditional, art is by examining form (what it looks like) and content (what it is saying). Narrative illustrations of mythology and religious subjects have been done realistically so many times that little is new about the form and content. Furthermore, contemporary art does not have to illustrate literary concepts. Artists of quality nowadays can explore a range of styles and new content too.
However, I do agree that the Madonna with Dung and Florczak’s other examples were also deplorable because they are void of interesting form and the content is solely to shock. Quite often the left chooses political shock instead of a depth of aesthetic exploration.
There are interesting works being done nowadays that are not solely illustrational nor shockingly political. But it is rare to find serious artists who are not of the leftist bent.

That’s definitely a piece people would want for the novelty and not its looks.

I've seen animal paintings in zoos, and the like, for sale in gift shops; supposedly, the money raised goes toward critters room & board.

I can see how people would buy those. They have cute stories behind them. They make for conversation pieces with friends.

IIRC, the gift shop at the Mystic Aquarium had paintings made from penguin foot prints; pricey but cute, Fine for decorating a kid’s room.

Let me guess. Ultimate Painting by Ad Reinhart? I did a paper on him for Art Appreciation because I figured it would be easy.
