I'm always surprised when these kinds of accidents kill dozens, or even hundreds of people. An equivalent wreck in the States might claim half a dozen lives, maybe a few more. But in India, a low-speed collision might cost 40 or 50 lives.
But then I recall the pictures of Indian trains, where there are hundreds of passengers riding on the roofs, the rear platforms, and even handing off the sides.

I remember a derailment in Bihar back around 1980, where several cars fell into a river. The official death toll was about 800, but it was widely believed at the time to be much higher.
Anybody who does not understand how a few cars falling into a river could have such a high death toll has never ridden on an Indian train.
