A needle in a haystack may be hard to find, but a Long Island woman topped that when she lost her wedding rings in a pile of garbage.
Colleen Dyckman panicked Monday morning when she realized she must have accidentally swept her engagement ring and wedding band into the garbage while cooking, CBS2s Carolyn Gusoff reported.
I knew in an instant I threw them out, because I knew I had cleaned the night before, she said.
Dyckman frantically followed her garbage truck to the Babylon town dump, where she tearfully begged workers to stop before her trash and treasure were incinerated.
She was visibly upset, she was ripping through garbage, disgusting stuff, Jeremy Aretakis, of the Town of Babylon Recycling Center said.
Eight employees joined Dyckman and her husband as they searched through a mountain of muck.
She didnt stop, so none of us stopped, Aretakis said.
They looked for the $5,000 rings that were placed on her finger with love nearly 20 years ago.
After about four hours, with hopes waning, her trash bags surfaced, but there were no rings inside.
Town employee Kim Weathers wasnt convinced.
I said, Im just doing to double check, and I double checked and opened one up and wow the ring, she said.
Buried between soggy cereal and slimy meat was the diamond in the rough.
I started crying and hugging her, Dyckman said.
I was saying to myself, I hope I find this ring, so Im happy I found it, I really am, Weather said.
It was beautiful, it was like out of a movie, Aretakis said. One of the coolest things Ive ever seen in my life.
The Dyckmans couldnt thank the crew enough. They gave them all credit, plus boxes of pizza brownies.
Now, the rings are back where they belong.
I wanted to give up, but they never did, Dyckman said. Its like my faith in humanity is restored.
Workers said they often dig through the dump, but rarely for something thats so small and precious.
I was packing for a trip back East to visit family when I noticed my engagement ring was gone. Took everything out of the box and no ring. Convinced myself that I had heard a ping when flushing the toilet and called my plumber friend to come go through all the pipes and the sewer in the middle of the street...no ring. Had no clue where it was but considered it gone. Sent my package via USPS to cousins house and waited on time to take my trip. Flight was iced out so plane cancelled, trip cancelled.
Started shopping for a new ring to replace the one that was lost and to my surprise the price on diamonds and gold had gone sky high since we bought it so just kind of set it on the back burner.
About a month later cousin finally sent my box from my cancelled trip home. I opened it up and my ring was laying right there on top. It must’ve been hung up on something when I looked through it previously and shook loose with the trip to Arkansas and back. lol
Next day I took my engagement ring and wedding band to the jeweler to have them soldered.
That’s incredible, too! Love these stories!
My husband used to keep his gold ring in a clay vase when he went to work (as a cop). For some reason I got really aggressive with the vacuum cleaner one day, and without thinking, sucked up all “dust” on that particular shelf. I had forgotten about the cleaning spree until I realized the ring was gone, weeks later. Through a series of back tracking, I went back to the vacuum cleaner bag, ripped it open, and there it was! I could have thrown out the vacuum bag and it would have been too late to recover the ring. I felt like God was leading me right to the place to find it.
Great story! Sure glad the ring turned up...
