Speaking of poor policymaking, hyperinflation and violenceVenezuela is sliding closer and closer to the brink of collapse, with some sobering consequences.
This was among the topics of conversation this week at the Mining & Investment Latin America Summit in Lima, Peru. While there, I had dinner with a couple of Canadian lawyers who represented a few Latin American oil producers, some of them based in Venezuela.
Things have gone from bad to worse, they informed me. Since 2013, when Nicolás Maduro took power after the death of Hugo Chávez, the socialist country has struggled with skyrocketing inflation, food and medicine shortages, a shrinking economy and rising violence and corruption. (Its capital city of Caracas recently overtook San Pedro Sula, Honduras, for having the worlds highest homicide rate.)

Venezuela should be the Norway of South America. That it is not speaks volumes about who has been let into this country, and what our future holds.

Let's face it, back in the days when the "Monroe Doctrine" was our foreign policy, we would have intervened! Yeah..., we were considered the "Bully from the North" but, we "usually" stabilized chaotic situations!

And not to mention our ‘bullying’ was ten thousand times better than what passed for self-rule, especially for the average Rico or Rosita. Our POVERTY LINE is middle class or better in their nations, for pete’s sake!
For that matter look at every single African and South American nation the colonial powers once ruled. Totally. Dirt. Frigging. Poor. And when they’re not going through another armed conflict of some sort they’re starving because they have 8 kids per family and food for 2.
