The secret to a complacent populace is contentment. If you want a free hand, you have to keep the jobs and wages abundant for the working class, and the freebies abundant for the EBT class. It's when you start squeezing too hard, letting your corporate cronies offshore jobs and abuse H1B visas, and you act as though there is no immigration law at all, that the people start to squirm. Screw with their health insurance and drive the cost up, that makes them squirm harder.

Make them feel like there's one set of laws for them and another much more lenient set for the Ruling Class, and do it while they're already squirming, and they're going to start calling for somebody's head on a platter.
