Android has a free app called ‘Wifi Analyzer’ that I highly recommend. It will list the MACs, the APs, the channels and their frequencies, signal strength for each AP, display nearby SIDs and their relative strengths (so you see your neighbors and avoid clashing on their channels), etc.
It has a really neat Star Trek Tricoder mode, where you can walk and wave your smartphone around and it beeps faster or slower depending on the signal strength as you move. It is a wonderful tool for finding dead spots and for properly positioning your APs.
I had a rotating ceiling exhaust fan that I didn’t realize was totally messing up my signal strength (rotating metal is bad because it scatters the signal faster than the proessor can adapt). I replaced the fan blades with plastic ones, and it boosted my signal strength by 80%.
It’s also great for finding the strongest signal location in a coffee shop or restaurant so you know exactly where to sit to get the best signal.
Wifi Analyzer is a wonderful app that I think everyone with an Android phone should have if they are serious about locating APs properly and finding dead zones. It’s free (shows ads).
Interesting stuff ... thanks for sharing.
