Recall the instructor pilots who thought it "strange" their students only wanted to learn how to take off, not how to land large passenger jets?

Assuming you're talking about the 9/11 pilots, I think they didn't even want to learn how to take off, but only fly the plane.

The way you make a small plane go down is to cut the throttle.. True with any plane really, but for a small plane it is harder to dive with the engine revved up. Also if you do that at low altitude there is little to no chance anyone else can both ‘pull up’ and also get the engine spun back up in time to not crash.
