Blue Jays broadcaster Jerry Howarth wont be using the word Indians when he calls the American League Championship Series between Toronto and Cleveland, and he says he hasnt uttered the team nickname on the air for nearly 25 years.
Howarth told The Fan 590 on Tuesday that he stopped using team names like Indians and Braves and terms such as tomahawk chop and powwow on the mound after receiving a letter from an aboriginal fan after Toronto defeated Atlanta in the 1992 World Series.
He called it one of the best fan letters Ive ever received.
He said Jerry, I appreciate your work but in the World Series, it was so offensive to have the tomahawk chop and to have people talk about the powwows on the mound and then the Cleveland Indians logo and the Washington Redskins. He just wrote it in such a loving, kind way. He said I would really appreciate it if you would think about what you say with those teams.
Howarth wrote the man back, promising he would stop using Indians, Braves and other offensive words.
I havent from that point on, he said.
Sportsnets Jamie Campbell, who hosts Blue Jays Central, said he will be following Howarths lead.
Like Jerry Howarth, I will attempt to avoid using the name of Clevelands baseball team during our broadcasts, Campbell tweeted.
The issue was also gaining steam on social media Tuesday, a day after Cleveland beat the Boston Red Sox to advance to the AL championship series against Toronto, with many praising Howarth and using the hashtag notyourmascot.
There have been demonstrations at Clevelands home opener every season for decades with protesters calling on the team to change its nickname and abolish the Chief Wahoo logo, an image of a smiling, red-faced character with a feather on his head.
Similar calls have been made for the NFLs Washington Redskins and CFLs Edmonton Eskimos to change their nicknames.
The Indians have said they understand there are passionate views about the logo but will keep using it on uniforms and caps.
But Howarth said he has no intention of changing his approach.
Its always interesting to see things in black and white but when you get a fan letter from someone who has lived it and breathed it, and said in a very eloquent way Its just so offensive and we dont like it it was my way of saying I agree with you and your feelings and thats how Im going to honour that and your entire native American culture.
The ALCS starts Friday in Cleveland.
Baseball’s an American sport, go back to hockey.
But then again y’all are stuck with the Maple Leafs.
“Burn on, Big River...Burn on.....”
To be fair, Toronto’s not the only team with a jerk broadcaster.
I offer Cleveland’s Tom Hamilton as Exhibit A.
As someone of Irish ancestry, I’ve just now decided that I am outraged, yes outraged, that the University of Notre Dame calls its football team the “Fighting Irish.” I’ve seen a number of their games, and some of those players don’t even look Irish. I’m also upset about the “Boston Celtics.” In addition, I think that those of you of Scandinavian descent should express your outrage over the name “Minnesota Vikings.” When will this madness stop?
May be Black Irish.
Yeah, hockey’s our thing. Canadians seem to kick America’s ass in that sport too. :-)
Me think he makeum heep big fuss over nothing.
And they sure as Hell aren't fighting.
When’s the last time Canada’s been to a World Cup?
How special for him
I can hardly understand the Blue jays announcers anyway, they have that weird accent.
The fans in Toronto however, are fantastic, they always fill that stadium to capacity and yell like they are at a hockey game.
I’ll take that over the fans is some places in the States any day.
We won it on Sept. 29.
Canadians seem to kiss America’s ass in that sport too....
they sure did a great job last season; seems not one Canadians team made the playoffs, eh?
sounds more to me that your beloved Canadians were more grabbing their ass than kicking anybody elses.
Soccer.
Self censorship.
Not our sport. I don’t recall the US winning much playing cricket.
Those American teams were full of mostly...who?
Sidney Crosby, Canadian, captain of the Stanley Cup champs and 2016 Conn Smythe Award winner.
Pretty hard to take an announcer seriously who calls them “strike oats”.
Go Tribe.
