I agree with several of Ivey's points, but not who he appears to attach them to. In fact, Clinton has very little going for her except celebrity: no political accomplishments (3 of her 400 bills having become law), no cultural contributions unless you count It Takes A Village which she didn't write anyway, she is what she is because she has been able to convince other people that she is what she is. Trump is certainly a celebrity for the same reason but underlying his own case is a record of accomplishment.

I take issue with the frequent complaint that the American public is more interested in Dancing With The Stars than with politics in its current disgraceful manifestation, at least with regard to celebrity. Sure, the polity is grossly undereducated with the structure and function of government and that is likely to be disastrous. "You may not be interested in politics but politics is interested in you," ascribed to Pericles (but I can't actually find out if he actually said it) is germane: these are people with their fingers in your pocketbook and their nose in your children's education, and one ignores them at one's peril. But in fact that rot reaches to the political class as well. Can anyone actually imagine the functional idiot who is the current President lecturing on the Constitution as his celebrity campaign claimed he did? Is anyone sure he's actually read it?

The fact is that the current political class does know what it's doing, that celebrity has become a lever to power, and that the Constitution has become an impediment to that class's pursuit of momentary political and social passions against which the Constitution is supposed to be a bulwark. And the less known about the Constitution, the easier that pursuit turns out to be. And that the author is a very highly-placed member of that class whose lament stinks of hypocrisy.

. . she is what she is because she has been able to convince other people that she is what she is.

Hillary's mentor taught her well:

Alinsky Rule 1:"Power is not only what you have, but what the enemy thinks you have." Power is derived from 2 main sources - money and people. “Have-Nots” must build power from flesh and blood. (These are two things of which there is a plentiful supply. Government and corporations always have a difficult time appealing to people, and usually do so almost exclusively with economic arguments.) Free stuff. .
