Yes it is awesome. Get it.
Be sure to take it with you when you go boating.
I have an old 500 short-barrel that’s never let me down. As reliable as they come.
Mossberg makes excellent shotguns. I have a bolt action from the 1950’s that still works flawlessly.
Love mine.
Not fancy, but functionally, as good as any.
You can’t go wrong with a Mossberg 500 or 590.
I like the Mossberg, I’ve had mine (model 500) for more than 30 years and it keeps shooting.
If you hunt, they are noisy both in operation and they rattle when you are walking in the field. And there are shotguns with smoother actions.
Overall, I like mine and bought one for my son.
There are people hate Mossberg, I’m sure they will chime in.
Brilliant, thanks guys - going for it!)
My son is really into shooting and after his first rifle (a Marlin .22), he really wanted a shotgun. I bought him a 590
and he has fired so many rounds through it without any problems.
The 590 is a great gun. Buy it and you will never be disappointed.
Not so good if you intend to put a pistol grip on it - the safety is way high up on the receiver and actuation requires letting go of the grip.
For a pistol grip shotgun you want one with a trigger guard-mounted safety, like the Remington 870.

Make sure it has the STEEL safety switch. The plastic ones have been known to break. If not, you can buy a steel replacement and install it.
I have a Mossberg 590. Great! Has the heat shield over the barrel.
If you're a Brit, why would you want a cheap, pump gun for this kind of sport?
Check out this classic line in London.

Very happy with mine, the silver Mariner model with ghost ring sights.
Even have the 14” pistol-grip-only model to match (same silver Marine-Cote finish but bead sight): few things will put a bigger grin on your face faster than shooting it.
I have several, as well as several Remington 870s.
Frankly I prefer the Mossbergs simply because of the safety position. So much easier than fumbling underhand.
The 590 is a fine shotgun. The parts aren’t completely interchangeable with the 500 from what I’m told. Other than that, it’s a good solid workman-like shotgun that won’t let you down.
We have the 500 tactical. Its great.
