Not Oil...Natural Gas.
Russia is the largest supplier of Nat Gas to Europe. One of the strategic advantages Russia has over Nato is that it can cut off the heat during the winter. And Germany freezes.
The the gas line cuts across Syria will feed the underbelly of Europe.
Russia’s economy would take the blow, but more importantly, the strategic advantage would be lost.
The odd thing is that it takes about two minutes to explain to someone not even closely educated on current world events to understand why this madness is going on.

I say oil but realize natural gas also comes from the Gulf region.
Moving natural gas would make the big difference for Europe but a pipeline system for oil going west would mean no need for tankers to navigate waters that Iran could shut down.
