Argument against Confederate monuments is hard to apply to Andrew Jackson statue

In 2004, when the comedian Dave Chappelle performed at UNO Lakefront Arena, he asked a white guy sitting in the audience to imagine that he and Chappelle could take a time machine back to colonial Virginia. He asked him to imagine them stepping out onto a road just as George Washington was approaching. "You might say, 'Look, Dave, there's George Washington, the father of our country. Let's go say hi.' And I'd say, "Run! It's George Washington!'"

There might not be a better explanation for why some black Americans look askance at white Americans' heroes. How much should it matter to a black man that George Washington beat the British and was the nation's first president when he also owned black people as property?

How much should it matter to black New Orleanians that Andrew Jackson protected New Orleans from a British invasion when Jackson also helped wipe out Native populations to create more area for the expansion of slavery? How much should it matter to Native populations that white New Orleans has built a statue to show its gratitude for a man nicknamed "Indian Killer?"

Take Em Down NOLA is forcing consideration of those questions with its announced plan to march to Jackson Square Saturday (Sept. 24) with ropes in hand. Despite Take Em Down NOLA's vow to pull the Jackson statue down, I can't imagine that they believe they can accomplish such a plan after announcing it.

Even though the New Orleans City Council approved Mayor Mitch Landrieu's proposal to remove four other monuments celebrating white supremacists, the city isn't just going to stand idly by as Take Em Down NOLA commits sabotage. The group must know that. So what's the goal here?

I can only speculate, but I think it's clear that by labeling the Andrew Jackson statue

Not only that, but there were wealthy black freemen in the south, in GW’s day and even during the Civil War.

Right now a court has blocked the removal of these monuments.

I would love to own an old Lenin statue. I would mount a bird feeder on his head.

Of course, you are right. However, the Civil was did lead to the end of slavery in this country.
There are those who believe that WITHOUT the Civil War, slavery would have ended years later on its own, probably due to the introduction of MECHANIZED farm work, which eliminated the need for large numbers of field hands.
In any even, slavery thankfully ended 151 years ago

Drive dat wedge! DRIVE dat wedge! Let’s not EVER look for anything we have in common, but make sure we magnify every little difference.

it’s a “who cares?” issue to me.

I’m not to be bothered defending statues or even buildings.

The way it works for me is once they get done tearing down historical stuff they will get bored and decide to venture out into my woods.

These old woods hold lots more history and secrets than any statue in any square in any town.

...And it is here out in these woods it will all end.

Promise :)

There is no legitimate argument against Confederate monuments.

I agree. They should weld a sign that says “Birds please $h1t here” and the statue should be splattered with paint the color of blood.

“With Jackson’s history, I can understand why they feel the way they do, but where do you draw the line?”

Certainly not until after all positive references to John and Robert Kennedy, and Bill and Hillary Clinton are removed. These folks, by some accounts, are racists.

Imagine taking a trip back in history and you come across a group of black rioting. One might say look rioters, let’s say hi. But you will have to understand why I might say run!

That valuable space could instead be occupied by a narcotics vendor.

There were plenty of free blacks who owned slaves...

And there were white Irish slaves.

Not just free Blacks, but also Native Americans.

James Vann (ca. 1765–68 – February 19, 1809) was an influential Cherokee leader, one of the triumvirate with Major Ridge and Charles R. Hicks, who led the Upper Towns of East Tennessee and North Georgia.

Vann became the richest man in the Cherokee Nation, and possibly in the entire eastern U.S. at the time. As a result of his favorable negotiations for access and land when the US government built the Federal Road, Vann built his Diamond Hill mansion, a two-story house constructed of brick in 1804, with access to the road, near present-day Chatsworth, Georgia.

He held more than 100 slaves and hundreds of acres of plantation. He also owned land at the mouth of Ooltewah (Wolftever) Creek in present-day Hamilton County, Tennessee. His Vann's Ferry landing in Tennessee was the basis for Vann's Town. Later it became the county seat and was called Harrison.
I have been there several times.

It’s not that Jackson was a Confederate.

It’s that he was white.

Maybe they could make a statue of noted hero Ray Nagin out of chocolate and display that.....
And they could put the statue in a jail cell.

Nah, they need to put it where the chocolate won't melt so stuff it in Rep. William Jennings "Bill" Jefferson's freezer (some stuffing required!) You may remember this NOLA dignitary and former Congressman of Louisiana's 2nd CD, he was the one with freezer cash who also made the news by commandeering a National Guard truck to check his home after H.Katrina. He is currently in Federal Prison serving 11 years for multiple bribery convictions.
