NH Humane Society: Dog's microchip allowed them to find owner

A Laconia man was reunited with his dog that was missing for three years -- thanks to a microchip.

Dan Levesque said he remembers the day his dog, Taz, disappeared.

"I was going inside of my house in Laconia, and I had her on a lead outside,” Levesque said. “And you know, I went in, and when I came out, she was gone."

Levesque reported Taz's disappearance to the humane society as soon as she disappeared, but didn't hear a word for years.

“I had her microchipped when I adopted her, and I was just hoping that someone would bring her in, and no one did until (Wednesday)," Levesque said.

Mary Lee Gorham, of the New Hampshire Humane Society, said Taz was dropped off this week by a concerned citizen, who noticed the dog wandering around Laconia by itself.

Taz was scanned, and her microchip directed them to the dog's proper owner.

"A microchip is the best way that we know that dog or cat belongs to you. They're registered through a national database and we have a company called 24-hour Pet Watch that we call," Gorham said.

Microchipping typically only costs between $25 and $40.

Levesque said it was clear that his dog hadn't been to the vet in a long time.

"Her teeth are rotten. And she's going to need to have them all extracted," he said.

The dog's medical care will cost about $1,500.

Levesque said he is just grateful to have Taz home.

"I never adopted another dog after she went missing. No one really got to my heart like she did," he said.

Levesque started a GoFundMe page in the hopes of raising money to pay for Taz's care. Click here to donate.
