Conventional history is that it was not a close friend, but rather it was Barry Goldwater, House Republican Leader John Rhodes and Senate Republican Leader Hugh Scott, who told Nixon he didn’t have the requisite political support.

Amazing. Barry Goldwater and Lyndon Johnson were both in the Senate at the same time, and Goldwater never met LBJ?
