She can read, but her comprehension is lacking. Hirelings and slaves are referred to in the third stanza of the Star Spangled Banner.

However, in the case of the Star Spangled Banner, the phrase refers to the British use of mercenaries and British practice of forcing captured American sailors to fight against the United States during the War of 1812, and not, as this dipwad, who should be drummed out of the service, thinks.
