Memorial Day is a tough time for me.

My sincere condolences for any friends or family you may have lost in service to our country. And I am extremely grateful for the sacrifices you and your loved ones have made.

I struggle with my conscience every year as to whether the day should be a solem commemoration of death, or if it should be a celebration of the life and freedom so many died protecting.

Normally I reflect on two of my shipmates that are gone. I wonder what they would want me to do. Of course, they are Navy so it's not too hard for me to imagine their answer.

I set aside time prior to any celebration to quietly reflect on the sacrifices of my friends and of so many others. I then go about enjoying my day as much as I can.

It’s not so bad, just hangs heavy for several days. I prefer to remember my son at spontaneous moments. Ceremonies are just a bit much at times.
