I think the MSM has two choices at this point. Depending on whether hillary makes it through this debate without a serious coughing spell. Even then she may survive to round two.
Otherwise, they have to double down.
No matter how bad she does they will have to say she did okay.
And given the expectation that she may hack up a lung in comparison if she make it through the softies will want to give her a break.

Or, they will have to go with someone else. Which is highly unlikely.
Short of keeling over hillary, of course, will get a pass.
