I saw some re-runs of his TV show a few years back. Unlike a lot of shows from that era, it did not hold up. A little ridiculous at times.
He was probably a decent guy but pushed gun control really hard.
Hie bio says he was a republican.....
I read the same thing about Jack Lord (Hawaii Five-O). One day at the gun club that I shoot at here, I found a 1970s issue of “American Rifleman” laying around the clubhouse and it had a report on Lord very definitely in favour of banning handguns.
I can just see their agents and other people in Hollyweird even back then telling ones like Lord and O’Brian that it would be this nice little bit of gesture P.R. as actors who portrayed cops or western heroes who’d favour gun control in real life.
I think Have Gun- Will Travel was one of the best out there. Excellent plot lines for a half hour show.
Yeah, I think Hugh was quite the anti-gunner. I remember many years ago he did an anti-war PSA.
The real Wyatt Earp demanded the cowboys who came to Dodge and liked to shoot up the town for fun surrender their guns, don’t know about O’brien’s beliefs. I wasn’t like the cowboys off of months on the cattle trails acted responsibly with their firearms, just the opposite.
And, not historically accurate, but that would largely be the fault of the scriptwriters, and not O'Brian...

He also played Arnold Schwarzenegger and Danny Divito’s father in Twins. That’s about it.
Hey! Consider your audience.
Wyatt Earp! Wyatt Earp! Brave Courageous and Bold!
Long live his name, and long live his glory, and long may his story be told!
