Miami-Dade County says a womans open-air tree house was built illegally, is unsafe and must be demolished in the next four months.
The Miami Herald reports Shawnee Chasser refuses to remove her tree house nestled against the forked trunks of an oak and strangler fig in the wooded front yard of her late sons Biscayne Gardens home.
The fight sets up an only-in-Miami showdown between a $7 billion government and a 65-year-old grandmother who sells bags of organic popcorn at Whole Foods.
Im not taking down anything, Chasser vowed during an interview. Ill chain myself to that tree house. Chasser, who discovered her aversion to indoor living decades ago, has slept in a tree since 1992 after she moved her family back to Miami from California.

I bet that Tree House Master, Pete Nelson, would come to her rescue. He would get that tree house up to code and a snap. I bet he would donate his services and help her with the city permitting process.
I contacted Pete Nelson, Treehouse Master, by email. I wonder what his response will be.
I didn’t notice it, but there’s a video at the Miami Herald link where the girl touring the house mentions it. Otherwise, a pretty cool house.
She is missing a sign in front of her tree house, that reads,
FU State of California
Oops
FU Miami Dade
ADVISE THEM THAT SHE DOESN’T CONSIDER IT A RESIDENCE BUT RATHER A PLAY HOUSE...whoops I didn’t notice caps lock was on!! I had a tree house for MANY years as a kid and noone cared!
I like spunky women, even if the are hippies.
I despise mindless Bureaucraps.

This is the new America.
.
Not for me....I sided, with vinyl siding, redid the windows, refaced all the door and window frames (outside) on a two story, home and NEVER applied for a building permit. I had built by others, a 60X120' building, on a vacant lot, in a modern city for my business without a building permit. I don't feel that I need ask anyone's permission to do ANYTHING on my property....never had a problem.
So we will order that you destroy your home so you can feel safe.

My position is similar to yours.

All issues aside, that is a beautiful yard.
My yard aspires to that.
