OS ANGELES -- Gene Wilder, the frizzy-haired actor who brought his deft comedic touch to such unforgettable roles as the neurotic accountant in "The Producers" and the deranged animator of "Young Frankenstein," has died. He was 83.

Wilder's nephew said Monday that the actor and writer died late Sunday at his home in Stamford, Connecticut, from complications from Alzheimer's disease.

Jordan Walker-Pearlman said in a statement that Wilder was diagnosed with the disease three years ago, but kept the condition private so as not to disappoint fans.

"He simply couldn't bear the idea of one less smile in the world," Walker-Pearlman said.

One of the funniest movie moments ever was when he went into a locked room with Frankenstein.

My favorite was “Silver Streak”.

I don’t think I ever laughed at a movie that hard before.

One of my favorite movies with Wilder in it. He was the fastest gun in the West until a 6-year-old challenged him, and he holstered his gun and crawled into a whiskey bottle. Plus the kid shot him in the ass when he turned around, reason enough to start drinking!

Me too. Right cultural jokes at the right time. I laughed so hard I cried. Probably would just shrug now. In comedy, timing is everything.

“Are we awake?”
“I don’t know—are we...black?”
“Yes, we are.”
“Then we’re awake...but we’re very confused.”

I was just thinking of that as well.

No matter how much I plead and beg - do NOT open this door.

Goes inside.

(Banging on door) Open up this GD door. Get me out of here ...

Now THAT was funny. As were all his movies. Stir Crazy was quirky and good.

I would post some of his best lines, but there are so many it is hard to do. He was just the kind of person who made every line funny.

Rest in peace, Mr. Wilder, and thanks for the smiles and the laughs. You were a classy guy, and will be missed. Now you are with Gilda.

Blazing Saddles was my father’s absolutely favorite movie. I can’t watch without thinking of him.

The world is less funny today. Now he can unite with his co-stars and be funny in heaven.

It would be toss-up between Young Frankenstein and Blazing saddles for my favorite Gene Wilder role.

Blazing Saddles, Young Frankenstein, Silver Streak, and See No Evil, Hear No Evil {his last with Richard Pryor IIRC} was hilarious. I have all of those. He was a good actor.

I particularly remember Beautiful Soup ... although to be honest, that's not quite how I remembered it!
