I don’t know what amazes me more:
That Watanabe was kept 50,000 pieces of mail in her apartment.
That postal customers didn’t complain or if they did, it didn’t result in Watanabe getting caught earlier.
Or that, there has been such a history of postal workers doing this that they’ve developed a well-known defense of the volume on their routes beingso onerous that they opted to hide the mail instead of delivering it.

Seems like the punishment doesn’t fit the crime. What about the harm and hardship caused by her to those on her route.

Our postwoman leaves the mailbox doors down.
You can drive down the road after she delivers and every other box is either fully or partially down. And most are warped out of shape where they have been hit by cars because of this.

Reminds me of our USPS carrier...*Drunken Al*.
We were at the end of his route, and the first house on the street. A couple of times a month, Al would put ALL the mail for our street in our mailbox ....and just skip the delivery. When I walked the dogs around the block, I’d drop the mail to folks. It was a local joke. Everyone covered for Al, b/c he was going through a rough divorce.
Small town stuff.

We had a carrier years ago that would hide part of her mail delivery under the bushes near our house overnight because she couldn't get it it all done before quitting time.
I think after enough complaints they finally promoted her. :)

I live in a rural area of NW Florida.
I guess I just take it for granted that we get great service. I don’t think I have ever had a piece of mail lost.

What I never understood about these stories is why they did not toss the mail in their trash.
No one is checking your trash. Imagine how long it would go on if they thought this through.

Years ago I suspected my damaged copies of National Review had been slashed by our postal worker, using a knife. I complained to the USPO and miraculously the slash marks disappeared on future issues.

Federal investigators charge that Sherry Watanabe hid "approximately 48,288 pieces of United States mail" in her apartment.Approximately 48,288? The only person who uses 48,288 as an approximation has pointed ears and a greenish hue.

There should be a felony indictment for each piece of undelivered mail.
How many people didn’t receive needed checks?
How many people didn’t receive bills and got hit with late fees and lines on their credit report?
Lazy bitch.

She should be required to pay the late fees for every person whose bills and/or payments were found in that stash she hid.
