If you want on or off the ping list for the daily newspaper from 120 years ago, drop me a line, either here or by FReep mail. The rate is 23 cents per week (3 cents for the dailies and a nickel for Sunday).

Recently saw an exhibition about the Czar and Czarina...paintings, gowns, uniforms, military adornments, etc.

FYI that would be Nicholas II and Alexandria. Also, France and Russia signed alliance a few years ago that would be one of the dominoes starting the Great War.

At the bottom of the second column there is an ad for $19 round trip from NYC to Indianapolis; $19 in 1896 is equivalent to about $550 today. A bus round trip today would be $140 for 11 hours each way, a train would be about $170 for a round trip 1.5 days each way, and by plane it would be around $300 for coach, 2-2.5 hours each way depending on the NYC airport. Taking your own car, it’s about 770 miles or 12 hours each way, at maybe 60 gallons of gasoline at $2.50/gal or $150, not counting all the other auto expenses.

And people in 1896 thought they were living in the brave new world, because of the newfangled technology that was available. If the world is still technologically progressing in 2136, the people living then will look back on 2016 and be astonished, not that we had so much technology available, but that we thought we were living in such a brave new world, with all the things we could not do in 2016 that will be commonplace in 2136.
