US swimmers Jack Conger and Gunnar Bentz have told police that they fabricated claims that they and their Olympic teammate Ryan Lochte were robbed at a gas station on Sunday. The sudden admission came as video was released in which the men can be seen running to and from the bathroom, spending over 10 minutes at the gas station a little after 6am in the morning. Sources have confirmed to DailyMail.com that Lochte and the group destroyed a gas station door and refused to pay for the damage until a security guard demanded they hand over money.

What I did not realize until today is that Lochte’s mother was the one who first alerted the authorities. So he may have felt he was in a position to not allow her to appear to be a fool, so he went along with whatever (exaggeration or outright lie) he may have told her. He might have told her he lost his money, and she asked how, so he kind of fabricated... not thinking she would call police or whatever she did. So now, he’s in DEEP, and has to throw someone under the bus, and it will not be his mother. ?? just some random thoughts.

The two that confessed were in Brazilian custody. Don’t be surprised when the story changes again upon arrival back in the USA.

Well, if they were in such dire need of a bathroom at that hour, why couldn’t they have located the security guard and slipped him a couple of Yankee dollars to open the bathroom for them? Being in a non-emergency situation does not justify damaging someone else’s property.

That is how the story got out. It first appeared in the US press because his mom was telling the story. Nobody reported a crime there that we are aware of. Once the story went international (it fits the meme that Brazil is a corrupt mess of crime), locals wanted to know what happened and the investigation began. THAT is what I understand about it. Lochte and Co. didn't go to the police. I am not aware that a crime was reported at the gas station.
Lochte was asked about the incident after reporters heard what his mom was saying about it.
