Watch documentary Last Chance U

TOPICS: Society; Sports
KEYWORDS: football; race; society
This new documentary about a small community college football team in rural Mississippi is an eye-opener presenting a blend of corruption, hope and lost opportunity that accompanies the US football industry. It also provides a good insight into the culture of this industry, and how the language of race and competition undermines everything that athletics should be about. Some of you have probably seen it on Netflix and likely have a different view than myself. I am not naive enough to believe all is good in college and professional sports, but I do wonder if where we are now as fans and followers is a good place to be. I recommend seeing it even if not a football or sports fan.

Corruption used in the system sense, not personal or institutional.

One of the best books written on public education is “The Rubber Yardstick” by H James Willard. A scientist’s perspective on American education. He has incredible insight and nails the issues.
