Mr Vance was formerly investigator-in-charge for the Canadian Aviation Safety Board and the Transportation Safety Board of Canada, and has led more than 200 air crash investigations.
He was the chief author of a report into the 1998 SwissAir Flight 111 crash off Nova Scotia, Canada which killed 229 people. The force of that crash broke the plane into more than two million pieces.
He told 60 Minutes that an absence of such wreckage was one factor suggesting MH370 landed in controlled circumstances.
"Somebody was flying the airplane at the end of its flight," he said.
"Somebody was flying the airplane into the water. There is no other alternate theory that you can follow."
Despite the extensive search of the southern Indian Ocean, no trace of the aircraft was found until the discovery of a wing section called a flaperon on Reunion Island off Madagascar one year ago.
According to Mr Vance, photographs of the recovered flaperon show a jagged edge, suggesting high-pressure water erosion that could only be caused if someone had been guiding the plane into the ocean.
"The force of the water is really the only thing that could make that jagged edge that we see. It wasn't broken off. If it was broken off, it would be a clean break. You couldn't even break that thing."
He said the fact the flaperon had apparently been deployed for landing also indicated that someone was piloting the plane when it hit the ocean.
"You cannot get the flaperon to extend any other way than if somebody extended it," he said.
"Somebody would have to select it."

If the Cockpit Flight Reporter is ever found (not likely), wanna bet it will be filled with “Allahu akbar”.
“Inflight Snackbar!”
The captain done it.
It was the pilot with the plane simulator that decided to do an ALLAH AKBAR and fly the plane into the ocean..NEVER EVER get on board a plane with a Muslim pilot, you are risking your own life
Captain Shaw, in the cockpit, with a flight stick.
Not “water landing,” but crash into the ocean. There is no use of the word “landing” in the article. This is one reason why we should not change article titles.
It’s been re-badged as ISIS ONE. The muzzies are looking to fill it with enough nuclear material to fly it over here and do great harm.
Well now wait a minute...
If we had a crazed muzzie on a suicide mission, he would NOT have ditched the aircraft (which is more of less survivable depending on water conditions, skill and luck). He would have just split-essed the thing into the sea.
So if these details are true... what was on that aircraft that was wanted bad enough to risk ditching it to recover?
Think Thunderball...
Look, any water landing is going to be a crash. Unless you’re in a flying boat.
But when your pilot comes on the intercom and tells you that he is going to try and put the plane down in the water, he isn’t going to say “I’m going to crash the plane.”
There was a story just a week or so ago that said that the FBI is saying that the pilot of MH370 plotted out a flight path over the southern Indian Ocean on his home computer. not too long before the incident.
Since the pilot was a Muslim, and the Chinese passengers are Kafirs like us, I am sure, according to the fundamentals of Islam, Allah would be pleased with the demise of over 200 Kafirs, and the Muslim pilot could expect a reward for his actions. -Tom
Calling Capt. “Sully”...
I suspect that at this point, the pilot’s gotten exactly what he intended - a terrorizing mystery that will never be solved.
And he deliberately set the jet in the water as gently as possible in hopes that it would sink to the bottom in an inaccessible/impossible to find location and leave no debris trail.
Evil.
It makes sense to try and “land” on water rather than just crash if you are muslim. If a muslim drowns they go straight to heaven no questions asked. If they land hard and die on impact, no automatic heaven.
it is pure nonsense to suggest that it was a controlled ocean landing....totally impossible with a modern 777 aircraft....I know, there was a jet landing on the Hudson, but that was an amazing feat....why would the pilot fly 6 hours and then attempt a landing on water???
No, as other posts attest to, he was trying to do a Sully, and then the suicide.
He was trying to have it all ways: proven not a good Muslim (gee, that almost seems to be a trend); flight sim fanatic who had a top amateur flight sim setup in his home; so in his warped mind, 'hold muh Koran and watch this, I'll Sully in the Indian Ocean' - which is x2 in degree of difficulty to be certain -- and then 'sink it for jihad'.
SO he could kill everybody?
Just curious where you get that conclusion.
