Also same era figured if you were within ‘range’ of a nuclear blast, it would suffice if your sleeves were rolled down and neck buttoned and turn your back to the explosion.
(Guess they got that from the warnings of looking straight into the sun).
When I went to Submarine School when going up the free ascent tank part of the instructions were to hold your nose and grab your crotch.
Now in a tank of 105 foot depth and big enough to handle quite a few people wide, the ONLY good I could see coming out of the ‘grab’ was to keep your body aligned - which is easier if your hands are doing something, not just flailing around.
However, back when I was a kid, not every criminal was walking around with an atomic bomb :-)
